WYD Cup – All the action live from today

StormDogs will bid for an unprecedented 2 in a row of titles in the Who’s Your Daddy Cup which gets under way on Thursday.

The MonsterHOND-managed team – boosted by a large expatriate support base – have triumphed in their last outing, but face a lack of confidence after losing in the Semi Final of the BB Cup.

“We are desperate to make sure we do everything we possibly can to make it two titles in a row,” said Hardus.

“We’ve got an excellent record, better than any other team in the BB Cup, and now we need to use that to our advantage. We want to retain our trophy and the lads just love playing the WYD Cup.”

A 20-team competition will contest the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Woody with the Oos Paviljoene, Lukes Skywalkers, Fetchers, Destroyers, WP Barbarians, Table Bay Tsunami, StormDogs and SAIL Super Squad missing the first round due to BB Cup finals and play offs.

The format of the WYD Cup makes the competition between the current 20 core teams more intense than ever. With no ‘easy’ match-ups every game is a potential knock-out tie.

And then there were four.

What an exciting season of world class rugby. Red Bull Cruisers, Destroyers, Vikings and Table Bay Tsunamis were all triumphant, and now only one game stands in their way of a spot in the final and promotion to the Premier Division.

Let’s look at the teams that will apply the war paint this week.

Destroyers has had a tremendous season and almost spoiled it last week losing against the Droeworse.

Their defence has been strong throughout, but lacking against the Worse. They go into their semi-final clash against the unpredictable Table Bay Tsunamis team with a solid x-factor about them with every chance of going the whole way. Tsunamis are enjoying the occasion and experience, and Angriff Coetzee has said privately that there is no team that they can’t beat – that’s confidence!

If you were to put down a template of what a really good team should look like for the future, that’s what the Destroyers is right this instance. Throughout the season, the selectors have stuck to the young players and their strategy has so far paid off.

The Tsunamis turned up for the first time in this season when they beat the Freestate Rumblers. They looked business-like and played without too much flair and unbeaten in the BBCup till now. Will they take that form into this week’s match?

Vikings by now have stopped scratching their heads thinking how they lost earlier against the Freestate Rumblers and are getting set for a battle with the Red Bull Cruisers.

The Cruisers previously defeated the Vikings 37-10, but however comfortable the win looked on the scoreboard, it was different to those watching live as the Cruisers were forced to scramble for the points.

The Vikings can stand back and say that’s exactly what we needed – they will benefit from that match and the previous 21-21 draw on the Cruisers field.

Destroyers vs. Table Bay Tsunamis

Two big questions come to mind straight away.

Can the Tsunamis continue their top form and climb to the Premier Division? Was last weekend a once off lost for the Destroyers and can they pick it up?

This is set to be a very physical match. The difference between the two is that Tsunamis is highly unpredictable. Destroyers, this season, has been incredibly organised and could be too classy for the Table Bay, who if they realise they aren’t in the game could simply fade away.

Last 2 times they met the Tsunamis at home were far too good, prevailing 53-31 and at home the structured Destroyers just turned it around for a 13-10 winner.

Red Bull Cruisers vs. Vikings

Where do you start? Cruisers can take the template from their battle with the Vikings earlier this season, plus the motivation to play in the final.

In the Vikings corner, the previous draw on the same field they playing the semi can only give them hope, but the forwards will have to do their job then the backs will thrive off the confidence and positive match play.

The Vikings will have to dominate everywhere on the park if they want to win this one.

Road to the final and Premier Division

This week things get serious, with the semis next week many sides have ground to make up, whereas others really need to win to regain their top places and the dream of playing in the Premier Division next season.

The thought of the 2 sides playing in the final and the promotion honours, the Pick of this week’s games must be Red Bull Cruisers v Freestate Rumblers. Both teams are expected to play a tough forward orientated game, but will no doubt get the backs flying once an ascendency has been created!

A closer look at the following games and scenarios:

Droee Worse v Destroyers

John Hayes’s boys enjoyed a bye last week, which will put them in the best position for a home semi and maybe a final! A win is all they need against a form seeking Droee Wors team, making them the favourite team to win the First Division.
Losing will still give them a home semi, but they might have to travel to Bloedrivier for the final if the Red Bull Cruisers manage to overcome the Freestate Rumblers.

Prediction: Destroyers by 14

Red Bull Cruisers v Freestate Rumblers

This is set to be a titanic class between two very powerful forward packs! All things point toward a fairly low scoring game here with a test match atmosphere. The Cruiser will be boosted by the chance of a home semi and final. Winning this game with 4 tries and the Destroyers loosing with no bonus points can maybe secure a home final on Bloedrivier. If they lose, they must do it with a bonus point if they still want to play in the semis.
The Rumblers will really be pumped up for a win as they HAVE to if they want to make the semis. Even better if they do it with a bonus point will be enough motivation to play their hearts out!

Prediction: Cruisers by 3

The Pink Ducks v Vikings

The resurgence of the Vikings could not have come at a better time. They are still in contention for home semi but will need a five pointer to accelerate themselves! What better way than against a struggling Pink Duck outfit that are really down and out. The Ducks only have pride to play for.

Prediction: Vikings by 19

Table Bay Tsunamis v Bellville Gunners

With the Tsunamis on a high from last week’s victory over the Ducks and playing bottom of the log Gunners, they must fancy a bonus point win and a place in the semis.
Prediction: Tsunamis by 15

Both the Tsunami and Vikings won’t have any spectator value. All eyes will be on the Red Bull v Rumblers clash. The outcome could mean home semis or even no semi.

Week 9 in the 1st Division

I like to think of myself as a relatively sporting astute individual, especially in the field of rugby,
but picking BBCup matches is a bit like picking the sex of a Thai beauty queen.

Freestate Rumblers vs Red Bull Cruisers
How oh why, why oh how did the Rumblers lose it last week. They had the Vikings on the ropes and then suddenly let it all dribble into the dunny. So do you pick them this week? Bloody right you do. Even though the Cruisers have back to back wins and they are on the right side of the Orange, you have to back the home boys here.

Bellville Gunners vs Table Bay Tsunami
We really have yet to see the Tsunami we know and love/fear. But they do love Bellville women, they do love playing at sea level and they do love space to move in. Lucky for them they have a game against the Gunners in Bellville then! It won’t be easy as the Gunners have shown that they are far from no hopers, but surely class will come good here.

Destroyers vs Droëworse
Going to go head and not heart here and say the Destroyers will snatch it. Their win against the Skywalkers was impressive, and this team of nobodies has really gelled into a team of nobodies that can bloody well play. Droëworse slow start to the season was going from bad to worse, but they must realized they are a decent rugby side. This decent rugby side now plays against a team who are trying hard to be a decent rugby side. It shall be tight though – prove me wrong Droëworse!

Vikings vs Pink Ducks
Fill the fridge with beer and send the wife and kids off to North Korea – you do not want to miss this one! Bit of a tough one to pick here. Vikings showed amazing fight against the Rumblers last week and showed they aren’t a team to take likely. The Ducks had a great start to their season and this potential banana peel will tell us if they are playoff contenders or just quick out of the blocks.
The Vikings sure were in a battle last week and this may favour the Ducks .
