BB Cup Season VI is upon us

And they’re off…… not yet – but almost!

The next installment of Biltong Bredie cup – and a tough one it will be – especially if I look at the contenders in the first division….. That might get messy!

Newbies

Not really newbies, but still they are new here, the 3 new teams are Oos Paviljoene, Heidies and the Wild Dogs. Welcome gents! This will be fun – guaranteed!

I have given them some questions so that we can get a good idea of what we are facing.

Team Name Oos Paviljoene Wild Dogs Heidies
Real Name Gareth Salvage. Despite the English handle, my home tale is Afrikaans. Ian Gravett Cody Mulligan
Where are You from In live in Centurion. Born in Nelspruit and had a short stint in Table view. Originally from Potch but now reside in Pretoria. I also have strong ties to Suid-Wes. Lichtenburg – North West.
Which South African rugby team do you support? I know most if not all of you are Province boys, so we need to add balance and some real north south derby’s. My bloed is blou (or pink). Noord-Transvaal! I am a blue bull supporter since birth
How long did you play rugby and which position…. any special mentions we should know about? Till Matric – Hooker. Nothing special. Tried 1 practice @ Pret Tech and had my ass thoroughly handed to me, 5ft 6 just doesn’t work after school for rugby. I’m a scrum-half, played all through school and a few years after for Harlequins, nothing special. I’ve been playing rugby since I was 10.I played stellaland fullback when I was 14,then played leopard under 16 fullback, got injured and moved to flank.I played leopard acedemic flank last year and currently play flank for lichtenburg club 1st team.
What is your main aim for your first season in BiltongBredie Cup? To cause terrible upsets. Just to find my feet, meet the other managers and have fun. Causing some major upsets and finishing in the top 4 of my league
Do you believe in Developing or trading players to make your squad better? Balance of the two, but you need to buy experience, stamina is also hard to develop and plays a huge role in BOR. Developing players in your first few seasons is hard with level 1 facilities. I have only recently been able to effectively train my players and relied on the TM to fill the gaps in the earlier seasons, I always needed just one more player. But developing out of the YA is my current focus and something I believe most managers strive to. Both,I trade for good youth players and develope them from there
Tell us more about your teams name? why exactly that name? Oos Paviljoene. This is a nostalgic reference to the “beton trappe” pavilion @ Loftus in days gone by. My first memories of watching rugby is seeing Naas kick the opposition into oblivion from these steps. I know the east pavilion has a very bad reputation these days, but they are cleaning it up. Played 7’s for a club sponsored by Wild Dog energy drink and liked that ad about how African wild dogs stick together and survive with clever twists and turns, also homage to an endangered species. I spelt it heidies, but its real spelling is hades, the greek god of the underworld.I chose it because even though he might not always be in sight he can always mean daanger for the strongest of opponents
Who do you consider the one man in your team you cannot take the field without? Flyhalf – Ari Ruakere, but he is 33. I need to find a replacement soon. Callie Swanepoel, my 6 and the team captain, one of my first transfers and the foundation of my squad, always does a solid job. Leon guzman, flyhalf, inside centre or fullback.he’s not my strongest player, but he’s the main part of every gameplan I develope for my opponents
Comment Thank you for the opportunity to take part in this tournament, you seem like a close group of driven managers and it will be an honour to be part of the BB Cup.
Editors Comment He is a Bull, the Team seems to have a lot of experience – but next season might be tough……. Another Bull, What’s going on? At least he comes from Potch so can’t be that bad! Good team – whatch out for these Dogs…… As you all know the Dogs like this competition. DAMN, Another Bull, jeez What did we get ourselves into….. Young team – these boytjies will grow….. Maybe not this season – but give them one or two …… the experience gained here will make these boys tough….

Previews

In the light that we do not have a bye week form this season – you will see that we have created a schedule for weekly previews at this link  - Between Anri, Ad and I we will be sending a reminder for the preview on Mondays. The preview needs to be for all games in your division and must be ready by 12 Midday  on Thursday morning on the latest. Preferably by 08:00 am….

Late and no submission will see you lose one league point…. I know – but how else are we going to get you guys to do it!

Draws in play-offs

Just to clarify again, should we have a situation in the play-offs where we have a draw – there is no sudden death mechanism. The Team that won the game in normal season between these two teams, then, if that was a draw too – the team with the most tries scored in the normal season fixture between these two teams (as we play single round and home and away points does not count) We will select the the team with most tries in the final and if still a draw the team where the man of match is selected from. Lets hope it never goes that far!

Fixtures (UPDATED)

All the fixtures  have been  loaded, on BOR and Biltongbredie .  Please ensure that you go an accept all the games loaded as quickly possible on this link . BB Cup VI is a single round random draw. 9 weeks of open season, semi finals and finals – and of course – bottom 2 teams relegate and the two teams that qualify for the finals will promote!

Special Mention- South African Super Series (SASS)

SASS is Monday friendly comp (ok rugby is never really friendly I know). the rules are actually quite simple. Play WNWIM every monday against steams roughly as strong as you are! The BB cup was well entrenched in the Vase section this season. and we might even produce the winner if you look at current standing – Places 1 to 3 all taken by BB cup members and one of the newbies 7th on the log (Wild Dogs). But it’s not over yet!  Feel free to register for this should you be interested – Entries for new members will open Sunday next week! http://sass.dreamreal.co.za/enter/

Now – all we have to do is selections and team talks ……

BAABAAS WEN ‘N RILLER

Voorspelling:

Mystery Punter: With nearly one hundred more points difference than the Skywalkers, mystery punter says Barbas by 18.

StormDogs [43694] – TK XV [43100]

Mystery Punter: Having lost only three games so far, the dogs will be too strong. Dogs by 21.

And then there were four.

What an exciting season of world class rugby. Red Bull Cruisers, Destroyers, Vikings and Table Bay Tsunamis were all triumphant, and now only one game stands in their way of a spot in the final and promotion to the Premier Division.

Let’s look at the teams that will apply the war paint this week.

Destroyers has had a tremendous season and almost spoiled it last week losing against the Droeworse.

Their defence has been strong throughout, but lacking against the Worse. They go into their semi-final clash against the unpredictable Table Bay Tsunamis team with a solid x-factor about them with every chance of going the whole way. Tsunamis are enjoying the occasion and experience, and Angriff Coetzee has said privately that there is no team that they can’t beat – that’s confidence!

If you were to put down a template of what a really good team should look like for the future, that’s what the Destroyers is right this instance. Throughout the season, the selectors have stuck to the young players and their strategy has so far paid off.

The Tsunamis turned up for the first time in this season when they beat the Freestate Rumblers. They looked business-like and played without too much flair and unbeaten in the BBCup till now. Will they take that form into this week’s match?

Vikings by now have stopped scratching their heads thinking how they lost earlier against the Freestate Rumblers and are getting set for a battle with the Red Bull Cruisers.

The Cruisers previously defeated the Vikings 37-10, but however comfortable the win looked on the scoreboard, it was different to those watching live as the Cruisers were forced to scramble for the points.

The Vikings can stand back and say that’s exactly what we needed – they will benefit from that match and the previous 21-21 draw on the Cruisers field.

Destroyers vs. Table Bay Tsunamis

Two big questions come to mind straight away.

Can the Tsunamis continue their top form and climb to the Premier Division? Was last weekend a once off lost for the Destroyers and can they pick it up?

This is set to be a very physical match. The difference between the two is that Tsunamis is highly unpredictable. Destroyers, this season, has been incredibly organised and could be too classy for the Table Bay, who if they realise they aren’t in the game could simply fade away.

Last 2 times they met the Tsunamis at home were far too good, prevailing 53-31 and at home the structured Destroyers just turned it around for a 13-10 winner.

Red Bull Cruisers vs. Vikings

Where do you start? Cruisers can take the template from their battle with the Vikings earlier this season, plus the motivation to play in the final.

In the Vikings corner, the previous draw on the same field they playing the semi can only give them hope, but the forwards will have to do their job then the backs will thrive off the confidence and positive match play.

The Vikings will have to dominate everywhere on the park if they want to win this one.

Premier Division – Round 18 – ok then Final round!

And now for the final week of long double round normal season. With some serious upsets along the way and some runaway victories here and there I bet we cannot wait for the play-offs – as that will provide more drama I’m sure.

There is a whole lot of dead rubber this weekend! But still a win is a win – and always welcome!

Skunx [42697] – Janbal Warriors [5501]

Dead rubber number one! With The Skunx sure of relegation this year (unless some miracle of added teams happen) and the Janbal Warriors bowing out in mid log after their loss to the Lovers (or is it the Muffins) in week 17. I think we can safely say Karel and JanBal will look for bragging rights – as that is all that is up for grabs. I do believe Janbal has shown over the course of the season that he is no push-over and his men are bound to stand up for this one!

Janbal by 11

WP Barbarians [43956] – Luke’s Skywalkers [42902]

One game that can influence the play-offs a bit! But only a little bit. The Skywalkers come off a bye, and the WP come off a loss against the old foe, but these two teams have already done enough to secure semi final births. However, a loss for the Skywalkers can mean that they end fourth (depending on other results). Meaning they have to travel to the Kennels for the semi – which is in recent time a happy hunting ground for Luke’s men…. Should they win this final round encounter – we have a rematch in the semi final a week later…..

I think that I will go with history here and suggest a narrow win for the Barbarians….. I do believe however that no hand will be shown in this fight and it will be all saved for the semi’s.

Rooijakkalse [43164] – TK XV [43100]

The Jakkalse can only look back on very strange season – a couple of narrow losses – by a couple I mean around 11 of the 13, most of these game could have gone either way and they where in the lead in the last 20 mninutes in most of them.  They could have avoided the slums of the log if either lady luck or the rugby gods had just been a bit more on their side! TK however is definitely a force to be reckoned with, as he showed against the Huskers in round 17. One log point from this game will ensure he has a semi final spot (on points difference) and a win can propel him to 3rd and a semi final against the Barbarians…..

I cannot see Jakkalse standing up for this one – although it would be a good way to shine some light on their grey season. TK’s by 9

Huskers [42802] – Muffin’s Secret Lovers [44231] -

My Pick of the week – set the PVR for some good running rugby

I heard someone say dead rubber? Not really! Especially if you ask The Huskers! Their only  hope is to win this with a than bonus points and then hope the Jakkalse can do them some favors by beating TK…. and denying TK a bonus  point – This can mean that a bonus-point win will be enough, but should TK get one league point, the Huskers will have to win by more 97 points for points difference count out. Something  I have not seen in the 5 seasons of the BB Cup. And with the FOTG rule, it really seems unlikely.

The Muffins Aka Giant killers are no walk in the park either – they bring the upsets whenever we think the Visman is spending to much time on Ski slopes…. Seems like the holidays and mountain air did the boys a lot of good for the win over Janbal.

Huskers by 6 (but that won’t be enough though)

Hope you enjoy the game and make sure you keep an eye on the press for news regarding games in the semi-final and final week as we might have a revival of the WYD cup to see the season out!

Good luck and only one wish – “WENRUGBY
